Ten Places to Visit in Marrakech

Marrakech is known as the Red City and one of the imperial cities of Morocco. It is populated by over a million people makes it a little bit crowded but don’t worry it’s still a great destination to visit especially the Djemaa el Fna Square which is one of the largest squares in Africa filled with street vendors and exotic performers. There are a lots of must see places to visit and things to do all around the city for you to experience and enjoy.

1. Djemaa El-Fna – This place can be found at the heart of the city of Marrakech. A best place to go to at night time because a lot of performers, musicians, dancers and story tellers are here making the square quite exciting and noisy with their banging drum beats and exciting shouts and singing and at daytime there are a lot of snake charmers that makes you feel like you’re in an exotic wonderland.

2. Souks – Some of the markets of Marrakech are located just near the Djemaa El-Fna. If you’re in for a bit of shopping this is the place to go to because you can almost buy anything here from shoes to spices, tea pots and a whole lot more. Just be sure to put your bargaining skills on, you’ll need it.

3. Dar Si Saïd Museum – The museum is just five minutes away from the square located on Rue Riad Zitoun Jdid and also has an entrance fee of Dh25. The museum is set on an old palace and houses many different artefacts from Morocco ranging from wood carvings, musical instruments, and weapons.

4. El Badi Palace - A palace that is now in ruins, admission to the ruins is Dh10 and you can explore underground passages and enjoy the ruins. Also, don't forget to go to the terrace, the view from there is gorgeous.

5. El Bahia Palace – A very beautiful palace. They offer guided tours of the place, there’s a nice garden, courtyards and a lot of different kinds of plants and flowers, the admission to the place is Dh10.

6. Koutoubia Mosque – The mosque is located just beside the Djemaa El-Fna and it was named after the booksellers market that was once located here. Even though tourists are not allowed inside the mosque is still a must see.

7. Majorelle Gardens – The place is located at Gueliz and has an entrance fee of Dh50, the park has a lot of collections of plants from around the world. Visit the gardens if you want to enjoy looking at plants and if you want to get away from the chaos and noise of the city.

8. Saadian Tombs – The tombs were discovered in the beginning of the 20th century. The tombs have been preservedvery well because the entrance was closed so they remained hidden and untouched for hundreds of years. Inside you will find an overload of beautiful Morrocan tiles and some intricate decoration. It is definitely worth the visit.

9. The Menara Gardens – The gardens are located on the west part of the city and the gardens has a lot of mixtures of orchards and olive groves surrounding a central pavilion.

10. Ben Youssef Madrassa - one of the largest Madrassas in the North Africa. It is a school connected to the Ben Youssef Mosque and is a place of beautiful art and architecture. A must see place to go to if you enjoy looking at places with great architectures.
